This is a discussion on Differences between 510,511,512 and 513 Series Vaqueros within the Ruger Single Action forums, part of the Pistol & Revolver Forum category; Ok I know the 510 series had black plastic grips and an internal lock. But what are the difference between the 511, 512 and 513 ...
Jul 09, 2019 Was in Jackson, Oh. Yesterday and picked up this Remington Model 510 TargetMaster single shot. Was funny watching the guy behind the counter looking for a serial number that isn't there. Better picture and range report to come.

Moderator Location: Arizona | The smart alec answer is one number..... But in truth that's probably not far off. If you come from the world of S&W you expect that with each design modification or change you would have a new number in the system somehow - like S&W's use of the dash numbers in their models. In the Ruger world things are much more fuzzy with no documented changes and specific number designations. Rollmarks change to laser etchings and move from the side of the barrel to the underside; MIM parts may get introduced; firing pins change to a threaded insert and other small changes but they're only noted in places like gun forums by observant owners. The change in serial number prefix for the Vaquero is probably nothing more than moving along in the numerical sequence. Once all the 511- numbers were used up they roll over to 512- then 513- etc. Historically Ruger did some things with serial numbers to keep production numbers a mystery. Many years ago they would go so far as to skip large blocks of numbers to make it look like more guns were being produced than actually were. Later they would go back and use some of these numbers. Then there are the 'clean up guns' where leftover parts are used to assemble a few more guns sometimes years later after a model had been discontinued. All of this is not Vaquero specific but puts Ruger production in it's proper context where things are not well defined or documented or published. It can be frustrating or it makes for an interesting place where you never say never and might just find the next factory oddity. Not saying there are no differences between a 511-, 512- or 513- but just that any differences there may be will not fit neatly along with the change in prefix. |

Retired Moderator & Gunsmith Location: CB, IA | Mnik, For most of us Ruger geeks, model numbers are worthless. We mostly go by the catalog number, which does have meaning. For example.... a Model 5106 doesn't tell you much but its catalog number is: BNV-35. BNV = Blued New Vaquero, 3 = 357 Mag, 5 = 5 1/2' barrel. There are also added letters or numbers for different configurations such as KBNV = stainless steel, RBNV = blued Bisley, BNV-35X = 357/9mm convertible. Model numbers can be hard to research because once a model has been discontinued, the model number gets lost in the shuffle. |

Posts: 37 | Well I’m just a little confused because I read on one of the SASS pages about some shooters preferring the 511 series over the 512 series and I wondered why, and if there was a difference between the 512 and the 513 series that I have. |

Retired Moderator & Gunsmith Location: CB, IA | Mnik, My mistake …. I thought you were referring to model numbers, not serial number prefixes. In general, Ruger's quality has slipped so an older S/N prefix may be a better gun. That said, it's impossible to predict which prefix is best because there are always excellent specimens and there are always a few that should not have left the factory. Lately that 'few' has increased. |
